Dr. Sonja Yow, a KGA steering committee member from EKU's Department of Geography and Geology, recently organized and sponsored one of National Geographic's Giant Traveling Maps being brought to EKU. The map of Africa was available on campus from March 18th-March 29th for K-8 students to experience "'hands- and feet-on' geography.'" For more information on this story click here. Dr. Margaret M. "Peggy" Gripshover, associate professor of geography in WKU's Department of Geography and Geology and KGA steering committe member, has been appointed as State Geographer for the Commonwealth of Kentucky by Govenor Steve Beshear. Dr. Gripshover stated that "this is a great opportunity to promote geographic issuses and geographic education across the state." Dr. Gripshover will hold this position through January 1st of 2014. | Allison Hunt, social studies teacher at duPont Manual High School in Jefferson County and KGA steering committee member, was named the 2013 High School Teacher of the Year. Hunt is a ten-year teaching veteran who has taught social studies at duPont Manual High for five years. Hunt mentors student teachers, implemented an AP Human Geography course, sponsors the school’s History Club and is a member of the School-Based Decision Making Council. Harmony Hendrick, a 4th-grade teacher at William H. Natcher Elementary School in Bowling Green, Ky., a seven-year member of the Kentucky Geographic Alliance and co-coordinator of Geography Awareness Week in Kentucky was selected as one of this year’s National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellows. She along with others chosen will embark this summer on a Lindblad Expeditions voyage to Arctic Svalbard. Clovis Perry was recently selected as the Area Coordinator for all pre-service Education Associate and 2+2 degrees in Education with Eastern Kentucky Univ., Univ. of KY, and Asbury College Teacher Education Programs. We are pleased to recgonize Mr. Perry for this accomplishment. | ||
