Summer GIS Institute for Teachers in Kentucky

 
 
 

This summer the Kentucky Geographic Alliance will be sponsoring a GIS institute for teachers in Kentucky. The institute will be held at Western Kentucky University from June 17-19. Plan to attend now... enrollment is limited to 20 teachers.

GIS Institute

Institute Componts include:

  • $400 stipend
  • Lectures and field trips
  • Hands-on computer training in Geographic Information Systems and other Geospatial technologies
  • Free materials and resources (including access to thousands of dollars in free software from Esri)
  • Enthusiastic staff with GIS expertise
  • Information on how to integrate geographic content across the curriculum and engage students in active learning
  • Optional graduate credit hours (3) from Western Kentucky University for a reduced cost of $500

Expectations of Participants:

  • Attend all workshop sessions
  • Attend the two follow-up sessions (November 16, 2013 and April 5, 2014)
  • Create maps from data collected on field trips
  • Engage students in map-making and present results at follow up sessions
  • Present information to faculty at your school
GIS Institute Field Trip

Eligibility

Kentucky K-12 teachers who submit an application and one letter of recommendation from an appropriate administrator agree to provide staff in-service presentation and engage students with GIS. Additionally, participants will need to take an online mini course on ArcGIS and present the certificate of completion as proff before acceptance at the institute. To be enrolled in the ArcGIS training, a signed contract between their school and the Kentucky Geographic Alliance that outlines the free software usage agreement is requrired.
